Retail dumpster guide

Department Stores

Packaging, garment waste and display fixtures, often at a mall dock that has its own rules.

Department stores make a lot of light, bulky waste: cardboard, plastic garment bags, hangers and packaging from seasonal stock. When a floor is remodeled, the load changes to carpet, fixtures and display walls, which weigh much more.

The bigger question is often where the dumpster can sit. Many department stores are inside a mall or shopping center, and the property manager decides where a box can go, when trucks can come and whether a permit or notice is needed.

Getting that answer before you book saves a failed delivery. Tell us what property management says and we will plan around it.

Questions people ask

Our store is inside a mall. Can you still deliver?

Usually yes, but the mall sets the rules for dock access, delivery hours and where a box can sit. Check with property management first and tell us what they say.

What size dumpster fits a department remodel?

Many remodels fit a 30 yard, and a full floor or closing may need a 40. Carpet and fixtures are heavy, so size by weight as well as space.

Can we throw out old mannequins and fixtures?

Yes. Fixtures, mannequins and display walls are normal remodel waste. Break down anything large so it packs tighter.

What should not go in the box?

Bulbs, batteries, aerosols and chemical products need a call first. If you are unsure about an item, ask before you load it.
